Choosing the Right School and Program in Canada: What You Should Know

Studying in Canada can be a major investment in your future, so don’t choose a school or program simply because someone else studied it.

Start by asking yourself: What do I want this education to help me achieve?

Think about your career goals, your existing education and experience, the type of work you would like to do, and the opportunities available in the Canadian labour market. You can also research occupations and employment trends before deciding which program makes sense for you.

Once you have identified programs you’re interested in, contact the schools directly. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Schools can provide information about their admission requirements, application process, tuition, language requirements and other important details. Every post-secondary institution has its own application requirements. 

If you’re an international student, there are additional things to check. If you require a study permit, verify that the institution is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). If working in Canada after graduation is part of your plan, also check the current Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) requirements and whether your particular school and program meet the applicable eligibility requirements. Being a DLI does not automatically mean every program is PGWP-eligible. 

Most importantly, do your research before paying application fees or tuition.

Education should be part of a bigger plan. Choose a program because you understand how it fits your goals—not simply because it is popular.
